World Baseball Classic could give Red Sox fans first look at playoff Ranger Suárez

The Boston Red Sox’s addition of Ranger Suárez was one of their more surprising moves of the offseason, especially as the response for missing out on Alex Bregman.

Suárez is a more than welcome addition to the Red Sox’s rotation and he represents the true No. 2 starter Craig Breslow expressed hope to add early in the offseason. Suárez was remarkably consistent over his four years as a full-time starter with his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies, to the tune of a 3.59 ERA in 104 appearances in that time.

But the postseason is where Suárez truly excels. He’s logged a 1.48 ERA, a 1.055 WHIP and 44 strikeouts over 42.2 innings across seven playoff series with Philly. The Red Sox returned to the postseason in 2025 after missing out on October baseball for three straight seasons, and Suárez will be an irreplaceable asset if and when Boston makes it back in the next five years.

Suárez has been away from Red Sox spring training for a few weeks as he represents his home country of Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. On March 14, he’s slated to make his second start of the tournament in the quarterfinal against Team Japan, one of the fiercest opponents in the Classic.

Red Sox starter Ranger Suárez has been incredible in MLB postseason games, and the World Baseball Classic should be no different

Saturday could be Red Sox fans’ first chance to see Suárez work in a high-stakes ballgame. He’ll face off against Nippon Professional Baseball and Los Angeles Dodgers phenom Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the single-elimination contest.

Suárez told Christopher Smith of MassLive that he doesn’t know how he can stay so calm and collected under the intense pressure of MLB postseason games. Red Sox manager Alex Cora lavished praise on his newest starter for seemingly never stressing out.

“And this whole thing about him having no pulse in big moments, you can see it,” Cora said. “The way he goes about his business is very relaxed. But when he’s on the mound, he’s a bulldog. He knows what he wants to do.”

Suárez is one of the biggest stars on Team Venezuela, alongside Ronald Acuña Jr. and his two new Red Sox teammates Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras. For the second straight WBC, Masataka Yoshida has been incredible for Team Japan — Suárez vs. Yoshida will be an incredibly entertaining matchup for Red Sox fans.
