Images and videos emerging from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the airport area, indicating possible damage within the facility.

Mehrabad International Airport, situated in western Tehran, is one of Iran’s largest and busiest aviation hubs. It primarily manages domestic flights, along with select international and official operations. Its location within the capital makes it strategically significant.

Israel sounded evacuation warnings across Iran, before striking airports, including the Mehrabad airport in Tehran. The Israeli military also hit the airport in Iran’s southern port city of Bushehr, destroying an Iranian carrier on the ground.

The Israeli army also issued an evacuation threat to people in an industrial area in Tehran and Payam airport in the city of Karaj, Al Jazeera reported.

Iran strikes Israel’s Tel Aviv area

Iran launched strikes on Tuesday targeting central Israel, specifically the Tel Aviv area. “Search and rescue forces, together with numerous emergency teams, are currently operating at the impact sites in central Israel,” the Israeli military said.

First responders in Israel said they were treating twelve people who were injured in the attacks, AFP news agency reported. Israeli police, while identifying “several impact areas”, said officers were present at multiple sites in central and Tel Aviv districts where shrapnel had fallen.

“The circumstances of the impact are under review,” Reuters cited Israeli military as saying.

Following the killing of Ali Khamenei, Iran has intensified attempts to strike Israeli targets and US assets across the Middle East. On Tuesday, a drone hit the US embassy in Riyadh, triggering a fire and causing what Saudi authorities described as “minor damage”. The US embassy in Kuwait was also struck and has been temporarily closed.

US President Donald Trump has said operations against Iran could continue for more than a month, adding that the United States is prepared for a prolonged conflict.
