The cat’s out of the bag.
Speaking at the NFL combine on Tuesday evening in Indianapolis, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton confirmed that newly-promoted offensive coordinator Davis Webb will call plays during the 2026 NFL season.

Payton said Webb has a gift, and he’s only giving up play calling because he’s confident in the young coach. Payton said the decision was made in an effort to help the team.
Earlier in the day, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane spilled the beans during his own media availability session when he said he believed Webb would be handling play-calling duties in Denver. Webb spent four years as a backup quarterback in Buffalo, and he interviewed for the Bills‘ head coach opening last month.
Payton has called plays for his entire 18-season career as a head coach, but he acknowledged last season that his play-calling hasn’t been fast enough as he’s gotten older. Payton, 62, allowed Webb, 31, to call plays in one preseason game last summer. After that exhibition game, Payton praised Webb for his fast, efficient play-calling.
Webb has quickly advanced from quarterbacks coach to offensive pass game coordinator to offensive coordinator over four years in Denver, and he’s widely expected to eventually become a head coach in the NFL. After he drew interest from multiple clubs this offseason, Webb decided to remain with the Broncos after receiving a promotion. His new OC title will officually include play-calling duties.
