Are two Carolina Panthers assistant coaches primed to spread their wings this offseason?
Two separate reports from this weekend have indicated that offensive coordinator Brad Idzik and defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero are drawing outside interest. Both, with the Panthers on the cusp of their first NFC South title since 2015, could be in line for new and expanded duties elsewhere.
Dianna Russini, senior NFL insider for The Athletic, wrote this about Idzik in her column from Saturday morning:
Several young coaches around the league are generating real momentum as potential candidates for larger roles. Multiple head coaches and assistants have shared strong reviews and belief in a group that includes Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb and secondary coach Jim Leonhard, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik and Patriots passing game coordinator Thomas Brown.
Idzik is in his second season as Carolina’s offensive coordinator. The 34-year-old has not served as the unit’s play-caller, a job that has belonged to head coach Dave Canales over both of Idzik’s campaigns.
Evero, meanwhile, was included in a report from Friday by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan—who ran down the possible candidates for the New York Giants’ head-coaching vacancy. Raanan gives Evero an “outside chance” to be hired out by New York, writing the following:
Evero is the defensive coordinator in Carolina and is considered a natural leader who can command the room.
Evero, who was hired as part of former head coach Frank Reich’s staff in 2023, is in third season with the Panthers. Carolina ranks 15th in overall defense heading into their Week 18 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
