GREEN BAY − With the signing of Benjamin St-Juste, the Green Bay Packers are set to cut cornerback Nate Hobbs as a post-June 1 release, sources tell PackersNews.
The Packers are not paying Hobbs the $6.25 million roster bonus, facilitating his release, sources say. The Packers save $8.8 million against the cap this year and take on $8 million next year. Since the release is not until June, the Packers will carry his full cap number until then.
Despite dealing with injuries and struggling to stay on the field during his four years with the Las Vegas Raiders, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst took the risk to bring Hobbs to Green Bay. The Packers signed Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million contract in the first wave of free agency last year hoping he could play as an outside corner after the team released Jaire Alexander.
The injuries continued to linger for Hobbs as he missed six games due to injury in 2025.
Hobbs showed promise during his first training camp in Green Bay, playing with a physical style and edge that caught the attention of spectators. His camp, however, was cut short.
He had knee surgery to repair his meniscus during camp in August, missed the season opener against the Detroit Lions and returned for Week 2 against the Washington Commanders. After playing through knee pain and struggling to adjust to playing outside, he playing time was cut and he was replaced by Carrington Valentine by Week 8 in Pittsburgh.
The Packers placed him on season-ending injured reserve due to a knee injury suffered in Week 17 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Hobbs never found his footing as an outside corner and played better as a slot corner, but Javon Bullard has locked down that role for the Packers. Hobbs played in 11 games with five starts. He played just 358 total snaps on defense, allowing a passer rating of 111.1, according to Pro Football Reference, with 27 total tackles, no interceptions and just two pass breakups.
During the end of the year interviews in the locker room, Hobbs vowed to be an impact player in 2026.
“I don’t think you guys got to see a fair version of Nate Hobbs,” he said. “I think you guys got to see the version of Nate Hobbs that God chose this season to teach me what he needed to teach me.
“I promise you guys and Packer Nation, I’m gonna be one of the best players on this defense next year.”
Instead, the Packers hope St-Juste will bring depth and experience to the secondary, signing him to a two-year, $10 million deal.
