Twenty years later, the world of Hannah Montana is still living the best of both worlds.
Disney+ announced Feb. 17 that the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” will premiere March 24, marking exactly two decades since the Disney Channel series debuted and introduced viewers to the role of Miley Stewart and her chart-topping alter ego of Hannah Montana.
The special will be filmed in front of a live studio audience and feature an exclusive, in-depth interview with Miley Cyrus, hosted by Alex Cooper.
The conversation promises an intimate look at the creation of one of pop culture’s most iconic characters and the lasting impact the show has had on fans around the globe. Cyrus will revisit the moments, music and memories that defined an era, with never-before-seen archival footage woven throughout.
Some of the series’ most recognizable sets — including the Stewart family living room and the legendary Hannah Montana closet — will be brought back to life, along with a few familiar notes.
“Hannah Montana will always be a part of who I am,” Cyrus said. “What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I’ll always be thankful for that connection.”
The Emmy-nominated series reshaped kids’ television, influenced music and fashion and helped launch Cyrus into global superstardom. It spawned 14 platinum and 18 gold albums worldwide, along with two feature films, and its catalog has amassed more than half a billion hours streamed globally.
“The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of,” Cyrus said in a press release from Disney+. “This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”
Cyrus first teased plans for the milestone during a July 22 interview on SiriusXM, hinting that she wanted to mark the occasion in a meaningful way.
“I want to design something really, really special for it because it really was the beginning of all of this,” she told the entertainment company. “Without Hannah, there wouldn’t really be this me.”
