League of Legends Voice Chat Confirmed But Not Any Time Soon

Riot Games has confirmed that voice chat is coming to League of Legends, but it may not be for quite some time.

Dataminers discovered files for LoL voice chat on the PBE earlier this year, yet Riot had not officially commented until now.

The publisher has released a dev blog revealing that team-based voice comms will indeed be added to the game, but not until developers believe the feature is in a good place with a lower risk of toxicity.

Riot claims: “We think when done well, team voice chat opens up the doors for enhanced teamwork and coordination, and has the potential to improve the overall gameplay experience for players that would like to use it.”

The blog adds: “We’ll do this by working with you all to find the best version of team voice chat for the League community.”

Riot Addresses LoL Voice Chat Concerns

Riot Games has been working hard to combat the toxic reputation of the game and has been cracking down on bad behaviour for a while now.

Despite this, the publisher seemingly doesn’t think that LoL is ready for voice chat yet as the dev blog states: “We want to get this right, so it isn’t going to happen fast.”

Riot claims it hadn’t added voice chat sooner because it didn’t meet the publisher’s standards for safety and reliability, while now technology has advanced enough to “identify bad actors.”

Riot acknowledged concerns over voice chat toxicity, stating:

“We hear that you are worried about a world where some people use Team Voice to be jerks, but we want to reassure you: we’re listening to your concerns and we are committed to making sure that that world does not come to pass.”

The dev blog claims that developers will meet with players around the world to test the new feature and suggests it may roll out one language or region at a time.

Currently, Riot states there is no timeline as to when voice chat will be added, but says more details will be shared in another dev blog later this year.

The publishers are being kept busy as LoL, TFT and other Riot titles have been banned for under-18s in Brazil.
