Jamie Lee Curtis’ Underrated ‘Jessica Jones’ Predecessor Finds a Fresh Streaming Home

From Point Break to The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow has proven herself to be one of the most accomplished action directors of her generation. As the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, her name is forever etched in the annals of cinema history. In 2025, she returned to the director’s chair after an eight-year break with the Netflix thriller A House of Dynamite, and, despite initial buzz following its premiere screening, ultimately failed to impress both critics and audiences enough and was dropped quickly from Academy Awards discourse.

With A House of Dynamite now not in the discussion as we edge closer to this year’s Oscars ceremony, there’s room in our action appetites to indulge in one of the more forgotten entries in Bigelow’s filmography. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Blue Steel is a 1990 action thriller that follows the Oscar-winner as a new NYPD officer, Megan Turner, navigating a male-dominated space and finding opposition around every corner. Bigelow’s female touch turned what could’ve been a by-the-books cop thriller into a movie interested in the sort of gender politics that feel much more relevant today than ever.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, critics responded positively to the movie, awarding it a strong 75% score, with the consensus on the site reading, “Blue Steel‘s increasingly over-the-top story beggars disbelief, but this cop drama is elevated by an appealing cast and Kathryn Bigelow’s stylish direction.” If Blue Steel has caught your attention, you’re in luck, as it will officially be available to stream on Plex this March.

As one door opens, another might be about to close for Curtis fans. Whilst noting the end of production on The Bear Season 5, Curtis, who plays Berzatto matriarch Donna in the series, took to social media and seemed to hint that the show might be ending with this next installment. “FINISHED STRONG!” Curtis said, adding, “Surrounded by an extraordinary crew and group of writers and producers and scene partners on the show that [Christopher] Storer created, completing the story of this extraordinary family that we have all fallen in love with. Got to finish it out with my baby Berzatto bear.

Blue Steel will be available to stream on Plex this March. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest streaming stories.
