‘It’s devastating to see this’ | Family’s barn damaged by severe weather in Hendricks County

Severe storms rolled through Hendricks County Wednesday morning, leaving damage to several homes and businesses.

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. — Severe storms ripped through Hendricks County Wednesday morning, leaving damage to several homes and businesses.

Patty Ingram recalled the moments she heard the storm coming March 11.

“Around 8 a.m., I heard this horrible ruckus, kind of like the metal was being ripped off the pole barn,” Patty said.

Patty said she was inside her family’s pole barn near Lizton, just off U.S. 136 and North County Road 100, when the wind and rain picked up.

“I hurried up and grabbed my phone and called the kids, only to find out the pole barn roof had been tore off,” Patty said. “I was lucky to survive it all. I’m fine, it’s just stuff, but it’s devastating to see this.”

Parts of that roof flew off and landed about 50 yards down the street, scattering a lifetime of memories.

“I’ve lost my parents. I’ve lost my husband, so a lot of memorabilia (is) in this pole barn,” Patty said.

“Barns been here since early ’90s and not really had stuff like this hit us,” said Chris Ingram, Patty’s son. “It’s been around us, but truly hitting here, I guess it was our turn.”

Chris spent Wednesday morning saving memories of his dad.

“A big picture board of him,” Chris said. That banner hanging down is something they put at the Pittsboro fireworks every year. They named the stage after my dad, the Walt Freedom Stage … We had deer heads that we’ve collected over the years. That’s me, him and my son. Kind of memory things.”

The Ingrams weren’t the only ones impacted Wednesday. 13News also saw fallen trees, bent speed signs, pieces of metal roofing and even athletic equipment tossed around outside of Tri-West Middle School.

Despite all the damage, this small town is just grateful they all have each other.

“Everybody has called each other and checked on each other,” Patty said. “Everyone’s like ‘Hey, if you need anything, we’ll drop what we’re doing and be there.'”

So far, no injuries have been reported in Lizton.
