MANCHESTER, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Tennessee DoorDash driver is overwhelmed with gratitude after a customer called on their community to help him and his wife.
Brittany Smith, of Manchester, shared a Ring camera video of Richard, her elderly DoorDasher who dropped off her order, in an effort to find him.
“I see this man walking up my front porch and he almost falls… and then he almost, like, stumbles going down… and I was like, this is so sad,” Smith said.
Smith says her family regularly uses DoorDash. Her husband, who is disabled, uses the platform to get his daughter food when she needs it.
When her daughter ordered Starbucks, Richard was the driver to take the order. Brittany got the notification from her doorbell camera, and when she watched Richard come up her front steps, her heart was breaking.
“My very first job ever was a CNA in a long-term care facility. So, like, I just have a special place in my heart for old people and veterans,” Smith said. “That’s just, those are my people.”
She decided to post the video online in an attempt to find him, and once she found him, went to his home to give him a $200 tip. That’s also where she learned of the hardships that he and his wife were living in.
“He proceeded to tell me that his wife had lost her job at no fault of her own,” Smith recalled. “By the time that they pay necessities and medications, there’s nothing left.”
After that, she launched a fundraiser for Richard.
“I told my daughter yesterday,” Smith said. “I was like, I don’t know what it is about this man, but God’s telling me that we have to go do this.”
The fundraiser quickly blew past its goal of $20,000, reaching more than $300,000 by Thursday afternoon.
