Hilary Duff on Haylie Duff, Parents Estrangements

Hilary Duff Details “Devastating” Estrangement From Her Parents and Sister Haylie Duff

Hilary Duff’s lips aren’t sealed when it comes to her family dynamic.

The How I Met Your Father alum candidly described her complex relationship with her parents, Bob Duff and Susan Duff, as it relates to the lyrics of the song “The Optimist” from her new album Luck… or Something.

“I think being very vulnerable and open about what it’s like to be in a family that your parents aren’t together and you don’t have relationships with both of your parents,” she said of the track’s lyrical inspiration on the March 9 episode of the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast. “It’s devastating. It doesn’t matter what age you are, you want your parents to feel like they care about you. And a big portion of my existence hasn’t felt like that.”

“I don’t know if that’s the truth,” Hilary added, “but that’s how it feels.”

The 38-year-old—who shares son Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie as well as Banks, 7, May, 4, and Townes, 22 months, with husband Matthew Koma—elaborated on her particularly strained relationship with her dad in the wake of her parents’ 2008 divorce, admitting that efforts to patch things up haven’t been fruitful.
