Higher snow totals expected – NBC Boston

The forecast is trending a bit higher for snow totals compared to just 24 hours ago. Our low pressure system will bring in fast snowfall rates of 1-3” per hour across a swath of New York City into western Connecticut and Hartford between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday night.

Meanwhile in Boston, the steady snow picks up after some ocean-effect bands begin this evening.

Here’s the latest as of Friday afternoon.

Storm and snow timing

Heavy snow rates of 1-3” per hour will fall across New York State into western Connecticut with 3-6” of snow accumulation already possible by midnight.

Boston won’t see accumulation starting until after 10 p.m., though sneaky ocean-effect snow bands will bring in some pre-storm snowfall around the coast and southeastern Massachusetts.

The shield of snow from the clipper system moves into Boston around 9 p.m. and the snow remains steady through the night.

The snow will be quite fluffy in its consistency as temps are well below freezing. In fact, we’re in the teens and 20s tonight so snow ratios may be 15:1 even to the shoreline.

The showers taper inland around daybreak, but ocean effect bands linger through midday in Plymouth County, and on Cape Cod.

Snow travel impacts

Travel will be quite dangerous in southwestern New England Friday night, so anyone traveling home post-holiday celebrations, or otherwise, should be extra careful.

Snow totals, plus the latest snow map

We could see up to 5″ inches of snow in Boston and much of eastern Massachusetts, with isolated places getting 5-8” along the south shore, depending on where the ocean-effect snow bands set up. Around 5″-8″ of snow will be likely from Worcester County to northern Berkshire County, into southern Vermont, and 8″-12″ are possible for western Connecticut.

Winter storm warning

There’s a winter storm warning in effect from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon for parts of Connecticut due to the heavy snow expected.

Weekend weather, and another storm Sunday into Monday

Saturday snow wraps up early in the morning, except for southeastern Massachusetts due to ocean-effect snow showers. Temps stay in the 20s in the afternoon with sun farther inland.

Sunday brings a dry start with milder highs near 40 degrees. Our next weather system will move in for Sunday night into Monday. Temps drop and with any snowpack, freezing rain will be possible for a short time Sunday night (10 p.m. – 4 a.m.). Then we change to all rain as the system lifts northeastward Monday afternoon and as highs reach the mid 40s.

Our days turn breezy but dry as we wrap up 2025. New Year’s Day is also breezy with highs in the upper 20s, but dry.
