The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said scammers are posing as AMBER Alert officials who call asking for children’s information.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is warning parents and guardians about scammers posing as AMBER Alert officials in an attempt to gather personal information about children.
According to FDLE, these scammers may call families and try to schedule an “AMBER Alert Kit appointment.”
If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately, officials say. Do not provide any personal information. Instead, contact your local law enforcement agency to report the scam.
FDLE officials stress that no legitimate AMBER Alert program pre-registers children, collects personal information in advance, or schedules home visits.
AMBER Alerts are only issued after a child has gone missing and law enforcement confirms that specific criteria have been met.
