Goldenvoice first debuted ‘trip’ model with Desert Trip
This is the latest iteration in Goldenvoice’s fall “trip” festival model, which features a smaller lineup of bigger artists on one stage with no overlapping sets.
It all started in October 2016 when, for two weekends at the Empire Polo Club, Desert Trip festival featured a once-in-a-lifetime lineup of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, The Who and Roger Waters, who took to the Indio stage and made the Coachella Valley the temporary center of the rock ‘n’ roll universe.
Each day featured two of the artists — an opener and a closer. Demand for tickets was so high that a second weekend was quickly added.
Ten years later, the Rolling Stones hit pause on future tour plans, and The Who performed what was said to be its final show last year at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert.
Metal-themed Power Trip attracted an international audience
When Power Trip, the second “trip” model festival, was announced in 2023, metal and hard rock fans were pumped about the lineup of Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Tool and Metallica. The biggest highlights were the return of Osbourne, the return of AC/DC after a seven-year hiatus, and the first show with frontman Brian Johnson since 2016. However, Osbourne had to cancel and was replaced by Judas Priest.
AC/DC’s performance emerged as the high point of the weekend. The band opened for the first time ever with the song “If you Want Blood (You Got It).” By the fifth song, “Thunderstruck,” the crowd was headbanging, dancing, and singing along.
Metallica closed out the festival with an electrifying set that began with the banger “Whiplash” from the 1983 album “Kill ‘Em All” and then two from its sophomore album, “Ride the Lightning,” starting with “Creeping Death.” The band closed the book on Power Trip with “One” and “Master of Puppets.”
In 2021, the City of Indio approved a decades-long extension of the development agreement between the city and Goldenvoice LLC, the company that has put on the festival since 1999. The agreement confirms that the Empire Polo Club will continue to host the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival until at least 2050.
Goldenvoice LLC and Coachella Music Festival LLC requested an amendment to the development agreement with the city in order to extend their term a total of 37 years. It includes the original 17-year agreement and an additional 20-year term.
The amendment to the development agreement continues to authorize five annual major music festival events, with no more than three events held over consecutive weekends, and with the same attendance of 125,000 people as is currently permitted.
