CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Safety experts say sleek car designs may look good but function still matters when it comes to vehicle safety.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says flush door handles on electronically powered cars can make it harder to get out after a crash.
Safety advocates say drivers need to know their vehicles, including where manual releases are located. They also say automakers should prioritize quick access in emergencies.
“I think more comprehensively, we can all be making smart choices to stay out of crashes in the 1st place. And that includes watching our speed, avoiding distractions behind the wheel, avoiding impairment, of course, and then of course, wearing your seatbelt as well,” said Joseph Young, director of media relations.
IIHS also reminds drivers that safety starts behind the wheel. The organization advises drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, wear seatbelts and follow the rules of the road.
