Boston police fatally shoot person linked to carjacking

A Boston police officer shot a person in a vehicle that was fleeing an alleged carjacking near Columbus Avenue in Roxbury late Wednesday night, police said.

The person who was shot was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said at the scene.

“Our intent is never to take a life,” Cox said, offering condolences to the victim’s family.

Officers were called to a carjacking at 1500 Tremont Street, Cox said.

Officers stopped the “involved vehicle” shortly before 10 p.m. at 10 Linwood Square, Cox said.

As officers approached, the driver accelerated and struck a Boston police cruiser, Cox said. No officers were injured.

Officers discharged their weapons, hitting the suspect, Cox said. He was taken to a hospital where he died, he said.

The officers involved in the incident also were treated at the hospital but were not hurt, officials said.

Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden also went to the scene. “We are here under tragic and unfortunate circumstances,” he said.

The matter is under active investigation, Hayden said.

“There’s a lot more that we don’t know than we do know at this point, and it’s going to take us some time to really get a complete understanding,” he said.

This developing story will be updated when more information becomes available.
