The next Golden Snowball surely belongs to Syracuse.
A lake effect snowstorm dropped at least a foot of snow on communities across Central New York overnight. The mix of strong, blustery winds and fresh piles of powder snarled roadways, leading to dozens of crashes and broken-down vehicles across the region.
The end-of-2025 snowstorm isn’t done with CNY yet: Another 1 to 2 feet of snow could fall by New Year’s Day.

With kids still on winter break, there were no school delays or closures to report.
The pummeling from Mother Nature has closed businesses and community organizations, from libraries and senior centers to all government offices run by Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse.
The snowstorm has also delayed trash pickup for some Syracuse residents and work to repair a broken pipe that’s cut off water to six towns east of Syracuse.
But Central New Yorkers know how to make the best of a snow day.

We asked readers to share photos and videos of the snowstorm. In response, we received over 50 photos and more than a dozen videos showcasing snowy scenes around the Syracuse area.
The photos ranged from serious shots of frightening whiteouts and car crashes to delightful snaps of children and dogs enjoying the snow.
One memorable photograph showed an adorable baby girl, born on Dec. 10, bundled up in a pink Winnie-the-Pooh snowsuit and enjoying her first snowstorm — a true rite of passage in Central New York.
