3 big moments from Day 10 of Olympic action
Women captured two medals for Team Canada today, with Megan Oldham’s gold in freeski big air and Courtney Sarault’s silver in short-track speed skate bringing Canada’s total to 11 at this year’s Games. Here are your top three moments of the day.
Skiing gold: There was a moment when it looked like the women’s freeski big air competition might not happen today, after heavy snow and wind delayed the event for more than an hour.
But Oldham was unshaken, coming in on top of the ranking and nailing her first two jumps to clinch first place.
It was Team Canada’s second gold of the Olympics and Oldham’s second medal — the 24-year-old won bronze in slopestyle last week.
Oldham’s victory also marked Canada’s first medal in the sport since it was added to the Olympics in 2022.
Scoring record: Marie-Philip Poulin, captain of Canada’s women’s hockey team, surpassed former Canadian forward Hayley Wickenheiser to set a new Olympic goal-scoring record.
Opening the scoring in a game against Switzerland, Poulin recorded her 19th all-time Olympic goal — and then added another one, bringing her total to 20. Her two goals lifted Canada to a 2-1 victory over Switzerland, securing a spot in the gold medal game against the U.S.
Speed skating silver: Sarault won her third medal of this year’s Games and it was nearly a gold. She captured silver in the women’s 1,000-metre short track, coming in one-tenth of a second behind Dutch skater Xandra Velzeboer.
Sarault has also won bronze in the women’s 500-metre final and silver with Canada’s mixed relay team this year.
“I wanted to win and bring a gold for Canada,” she said, but added she is still “so proud” of herself and how hard she’s worked.
